Last year Jenn Schmalz displayed her rugs at Scott Manor for a week in the month of August. During that week, several of our visitors mentioned that they would be interested in learning how to hook for themselves. We heard them and decided to add a rug hooking workshop this year.
Supplies:
For those of you that are newcomers, Jenn recommends that you visit Deanna Fitzpatrick’s website, at hookingrugs.com or google Deanna Fitzpatrick kits. Everything you need to get started is supplied in one of these kits. Recommended for your first piece is the kit valued at $49.95, plus $14.95 for shipping.
The kit includes:
• A hand drawn pattern on burlap
• All the yarn/wool required for pattern
• Color key to show you where the colors go
• A color picture of the completed rug
• An illustrated set of instructions
In addition to the kit you will need a 10” hoop which, if needed, can be be purchased from hookingrugs.com for $7.95
Others who may simply want to come for a couple of days to hook, but not to participate in the structured workshop, are welcome to do so and bring their own work. Jenn will have a cutter available; however if you want to bring your own, please do. Workshop participants will take a short lunch break at 12:30 p.m.
For anyone attending the workshop, both Registered and Non-Registered participants, you will need to bring:
- a Folding Lawn Chair
- and your Lunch
You are forewarned that there will be no space available in the Scott Manor House fridge for the lunches of participants. Therefore we strongly suggest you bring a cooler bag for your sandwich and drink. For those that choose not to bring lunch, tea and oak cakes can be purchased from the tearoom onsite, but only after it opens at 2:00 p.m.
Dependent on the weather, the workshop will be set up on the veranda, a beautiful outdoor space.
Jenn is looking forward to hosting the group and providing guidance to those who register for the workshop. Otherwise, she sees this event as a wonderful time to share best practices and meet new friends.
For any questions you may have, please feel free to email Jenn at jen.schmalz55@gmail.com
